Marshland 4: Felthorpe

The Marshland series was painted at a time when I was revisiting a place in my own history of growing up on the Marshland of South Norfolk. The series comprises of 4 very different paintings, each speaking deeply to my love of nature.

Whilst Felthorpe airfield is neither marshland, nor my childhood home, there was something about the mist on this morning which captured the ethereal qualities I so often found peace in as a child. Paired with a vibrant sky the scene spoke to my brushes egging them on to capture the emotions of the morning sun.

Joviah - Memories of Childhood War

Joviah wasn't a painting, she was a journey. A deeply bold palette and eyes with a depth that convey stories of strength and survival. Joviah was painted at a time when my own stories were deeply troubling my mind. I was drawn to her incredible strength and resilience.

Focus in on her gaze and feel what she brings to the surface for you.

Joviah is an unapologetic painting suited as a centre piece in any room.

Original work in acrylic on stretched cotton deep framed canvas 50x50cm. Currently in exhibition, please contact me to express interest.

Sun Kissed Curves

Sun Kissed Curves is a more playful piece which represented for me a sense of freedom. I was drawn to her feminine shapes and the way the light dances off her skin.

In exploring the use of bold colour palettes I found the contrast between warm and cool in this piece striking.

She feels released from the bounds of societal expectations and in her slumber on summer grass she cares not for the opinion of others.

Bound to be a conversation piece at any dinner party.

Gewitan - To have of knowledge

Gewitan, pronounced ‘Gershwin’, comes from Old English meaning "to go," "depart,"or “pass away”, often referring to leaving a place or transitioning. However the term gained additional metaphorical and poetic interpretations in historical texts, implying departing with knowledge or wisdom in certain contexts.

I painted Gewitan at a time when I felt deeply drawn to faces of people with many stories, perhaps whilst I was once again processing my own stories of past times.

In my mind, Gewitan has an innate awareness of his limited remaining journey and reflects deeply on his own struggles and the happiness which often passed him by.

He has a profound understanding of time, and loss.

Original work in acrylic on stretched cotton canvas 50x70cm. Currently in exhibition, please email to express interest.

Warm Skies

It is unusual for me to be drawn to a calmer palette, but in a small series of paintings I found myself swathing the brushes in ochre hues and desaturated greys.

This piece is very much about serenity, it’s a balm for weary souls and invites you to take a moments breath in the questions it asks.

I painted this in a period of healing from a deeply troubled time. Whilst managing the tight grip of grief, alongside the chaos of menopause, I found myself tumbling further than I ever had before. I was forced to take stock, and to focus on my healing.

As a moved through the stages of grief, this painting, along with its sister ‘Veil of Solitude’, were born as I made peace with my loss.

Waxham

It’s difficult to put into words the place this picture was born. Those who know of it will connect on a deep level with the scene of a fiery sunset over green dunes, with an inviting warm sea awaiting the midnight swimmers to play with the bioluminescent plankton.

It’s one of the few remaining places that children are not hidden away on screens, but instead fetch water for the campers in exchange for pocket money, set out fires for the cooking and evening gatherings, and play with the freedom of a community of watchful eyes.

In the evenings, guitars and harmonicas can be heard across the sea breeze and camp songs are sung. Later, the deep base of rhythmic tunes floats up from the beaches where the youngster party into the dawn.

I sought solitude in this place whilst grappling with a period of grief, spending my days painting, reading and swimming, and my evenings connecting with friends.

Golden Horizon

This painting captures the fleeting beauty of a dreamlike

horizon, where shimmering golden waves meet the softness

of a pillowing pink and grey sky. It reflects the harmony

between two opposing yet complementary forces: the

steadfast strength of the sea and the tender, ephemeral

nature of the sky.

The idea for this piece stemmed from a desire to explore

moments of transition—those quiet, almost sacred instances

when one world fades into another.

The golden sea symbolises resilience and the continuity of life’s flow, while the sky embodies introspection and the transient nature of our emotions
